Of course, they’re running scared.  Why else would you see interviews like this:

Minnesota Representative Michelle Bachmann calls Obama “anti-American” for his “close association” with Bill Ayers. She also comes just short of calling anyone who is left leaning and liberal as anti-American. So I guess that makes me anti-American.

Also in the segment, they played a robocall that the McCain campaign is rolling out in contested regions across the country. It essentially says that Obama is associated with terrorists who “kill Americans”.

Let’s look as some of the facts. This information is from factcheck.org, a non-partisan website devoted to keeping both sides of the political spectrum honest. Read the whole article, because there is a great deal of good information there.

Barack Obama and Bill Ayers did not have a “close relationship”, they worked on a couple of boards together, and Ayers sponsored a meet-and-greet at his home when Obama was running for the Illinois State Senate. That’s it.

Now, for the folks out there who aren’t familiar with how board work goes, I’ll share some of my experience as an executive assistant. Board membership generally isn’t something you work at full time. Depending on the board rules, you meet anywhere anywhere from once a month to once a year. You read a lot of data sent to you by the CEO of the organization, and at meetings you discuss the information and vote on it. You may make an appearance at fundraisers or employee meetings or at a press conference. That’s about it, because, quite frankly, if it was more than that, not many people would agree to work on boards, because they’re usually working full time at their day job as well.

As for the “meet-and greet”, do you know how many of those things candidates go to? Most of the time, they don’t even know the person sponsoring the event, and there’s certainly not time enough to spend significant time with the sponsor. The whole idea is to spend time with folks who don’t know you to gather votes.

As for “killing Americans”, the only Americans the Weathermen killed were themselves. They gave warnings before any of their bombs went off to allow people to evacuate. I don’t condone the setting of bombs, I’m just saying that they didn’t kill anyone with their bombs except three of their own members who died putting one together. The robocall by the McCain campaign is slanted and misleading.

So, how do we fight the lies and misleading attacks? Arm yourself with the facts. Get out there, knock on doors, make phone calls, and let people know the truth. The Republicans are running scared, and that’s when they’re the most dangerous. Don’t let misinformation go unconfronted. Do it politely and respectfully, but don’t let an opportunity go by to confront people with the truth. Confront the lies.

Take responsibility for this election. Take responsibility for your government. Elect Barack Obama!
