One of the most enlightening workshops I’ve attended in the last few years was a mandatory diversity workshop at my place of employment.  I was prepared to be bored, because I hadn’t heard anything unique on diversity in years.  This one surprised me.  Our facilitator, Trula Nicolas, a Professor at Western Washington University, came at things not from the perspective of the have-nots, but from the perspective of the haves.  She talked about diversity from the perspective of privilege.  This was a unique viewpoint for me, and it gave me a vocabulary to talk to others who just don’t understand the privileges we have as white Americans (although, scarily enough, I was the 2nd least privileged person in the room *laughs*).

A few days ago, while surfing the web, I came across Tim Wise’s essay, This Is Your Nation on White Privelege.  In his essay, Tim Wise points out just how big a role white privilege is playing in the current presidential campaign.  The type of racist, hysterical rhetoric being poured out about Obama is nothing but an expression of white privilege.

This Is Your Nation on White Privilege.  Go read it.
