For those who have never experienced a severe mental illness, either in themselves or a loved one, Untreatable’s Blog will definitely be an eye opener.
Starting with Depression early in life and progressing to self-harm, suicidal ideation, PTSD, generalized anxiety, and borderline personality disorder, Untreatable’s life is one that most of us wouldn’t have survived. The fact that he can talk about his life and his illness with such candor is a testament to his strength of character, although I suspect he doubts that strength some time.
In today’s society where mental illness still carries such a stigma, blogs such as Untreatable’s are important. It’s so easy to push the plight of the mentally ill out of our minds. We don’t think about the fact that so many are without insurance, and many that have insurance have limited mental health coverage. Not to mention the fact that when you most need treatment is a time when you are least equipped to deal with the maze that is insurance and public health bureaucracy. Some of his posts can become difficult to read not just because of the subject matter, but also because on occasion he forgets he has an enter key. The paragraphs can run on, which makes readability difficult. I encourage you to keep reading anyway. Trust me, it’s worth it.
I started reading Untreatable’s blog out of curiosity and a bit of kinship. Having struggled myself for so many years with chronic depression, I’m always interested to hear how others deal with mental illness. I continue to read as a reminder to myself just how lucky I am. Yes, I deal with chronic illnesses and still have fights with depression on occasion. But considering my background, it could be much, much worse.
I recommend Untreatable’s blog to anyone suffering from mental illness, with a loved one with a mental illness, and especially for those who have had no contact with mental illness. Let us never forget those in our society who are in need, those that are so often hidden from sight. Thank you, Untreatable, and all the bloggers like you, who bring the spotlight to the problems of mental illness in our country.
